Leisa Yeats has always defined herself by the things that are important to her – a good family, a loving relationship and a meaningful job working with kids. Life is good. But within a span of a few weeks, all of that changes. She’s always known she was adopted, but newly revealed lies and secrets kept by her parents make her question everything she thought she knew about her beginnings. Her ten-year relationship with her partner, Nan, is unexpectedly on shaky ground when she discovers that Nan, too, has kept a secret from her all these years. Suddenly, everything Leisa believed – about her life, about the people around her, about herself – everything is turned upside down, and nothing is as she thought it was. Pulling away to try and sort things out, Leisa reaches out to the wrong people and, in the process, nearly loses herself. Buffeted at every turn by storms that shake the very foundation of her world, Leisa must figure out whom and what she can hold fast to as the winds of change blow.

As mentioned in previous reviews, I am always looking for books in the LGBTQ genre. I believe that there is now a growing body of work in this category, and "Year of the Monsoon" by Caren J. Werlinger is an extremely worthwhile contribution. The story deals not only with the relationship between the two main characters, Leisa and Nan, but also includes numerous other well-drawn personalities, providing an intricate and authentic plot. Even the two canine characters in the story, Bronwyn and Gimli, are more than incidental to the plot and add depth and sympathy.

The narrative hinges on the psychological implications of a sense of family belonging. Leisa, as a child protective services caseworker, becomes completely involved in the situation of Mariella, a little girl who was picked up by the police after her mother died of a drug overdose. Leisa, an adopted child herself (though she is now orphaned as both her adoptive parents have died) feels a strong pull towards Mariella, but her spouse Nan seems to be completely opposed to having children, and in any case, their trusting 10-year relationship is suffering extreme stress. To avoid being a spoiler, I won't go into any more detail with the plot, except to say that it is nuanced and very well worked out, as the couple faces and surmounts numerous challenges. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

I LOVE THIS STORY. THE CHARACTERS WERE SO REAL, RAW AND VULNERABLE.. I SAW MYSELF READING THIS BOOK. IT IS A BOOK OF LOVE, DEATH, LOSS, MISTAKES AND LEARNING AND GROWING FROM OUR MISTAKES INSTEAD OF LETTING THEM CONTROL US, REGRET, AND MOST IMPORTANTLY FAMILY. A MUST READ FOR EVERYONE, FOR CAN LEARN MUCH ABOUT THEMSELVES FROM READING THIS BOOK.
Second book I've read by Werlinger. Another nail biter, creatively written. So many pieces in the book about Nan and Leisa were very relative to my wife and I. Loved the ending loved the story of the monsoon and how it all flowed together with such a beautiful ending. I laughed and cried at moments of reading this book, but what an adventure it was getting to know all the characters.
The story was captivating from page one. It had so many facets and levels to it. Realistic in the storyline and I appreciated the depth of emotions throughout.

I rated it 5 because it went beyond the "jump your bones" romance to a gut wrenching story of loss of family, self, and facades to truthful healing and growing into more...
Raw, real emotion in this book about the shifting sand we build our lives on, and the power of omissions and lies. Some parts of this are a bit too neat for me, some characters ducking in to wreak havoc and then shifting away to become obscure references, and a few too-good-to-be-true happy endings. The very real and palpable pain between characters, though, is fantastically written. You can feel the agony of disappointment and the desperate way some of these characters try to bridge their mistakes and reach each other. A great study in the experience of a long relationship and the power of youthful mistakes that you can't ever fully escape.
The author has chosen a wonderful analogy for the events that unfold in the protagonist lives. Two women who are committed to each other & love each other go through many life changing events. It is a wonderfully crafted novel with many twists & turns ad they survive each calamity. Well worth reading.
Caren has never shied away from tackling tough subjects in her works and still produce a beautifully written story. This book is no different. The style of writing though is a departure from her other works, clever mix of past to present, intense and raw at times. Emotions conveyed mirror real life. I liked it a lot and recommend it. The author is immensely skilled in her craft and it shows in this work.
During the first couple of chapters, I had a bit of trouble keeping track of Leisa, Nan, Maddie, and Lyn. Once I had them sorted out, I became really involved with the story and felt the book to be one of the best and most touching lesbian novels I have read this year--and I've read several. Perhaps because I adopted a child, and perhaps because my longtime partner once gave up a baby for adoption because she couldn't care for it, this story hit close to home. Had I not had these real life experiences, I might have thought the complex family issues a bit over the top; however, I knew all the feelings and this story rang true for me. I most appreciate lesbian novels that are romances and love stories and not just novellas about physical passion. So this one is very special! Thank you, Caren!
